The Importance of Early Pregnancy Detection

Pregnancy testing is a fundamental part of reproductive health. Knowledge of the presence or absence of pregnancy is fundamental to determining a range of medical and life choices. Worldwide, an estimated 44% of pregnancies are unintended. Translated this means there are 62 unintended pregnancies per 1,000 women aged 15-44. Although estimations don’t exist, women with unintended pregnancies are more likely to recognize their pregnancies late. Late recognition has been shown to be associated with poor birth outcomes like premature birth, low-birth-weight, and NICU admissions.

    THE SOLUTION

The core mechanism of action of the pregnancy tests is the detection of the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. hCG is a hormone produced by a woman in pregnancy, as it is released when a fertilized egg embeds in the uterine wall.  We offer a range of pregnancy tests, including basic and high sensitivity dipstick urine tests with fast and accurate readouts. Urine tests are most reliable when used 2-3 weeks after potential conception. Also available are mid-stream pregnancy tests for use during urination. This test is an antigen-capture immunochromatographic assay.

Early pregnancy detection supports timely access to antenatal care, pregnancy counseling, and appropriate clinical decision-making. Rapid hCG testing is widely used in hospitals, clinics, community health programs, and family planning services to help guide patient management.

    Clinical Applications

The Pregnancy Test (hCG) is suitable for:

    • Antenatal care clinics
    • Family planning services
    • Reproductive health programs
    • Primary healthcare facilities
    • Community health outreach
    • Emergency departments
    • Hospitals and maternity clinics
    • Humanitarian and low-resource healthcare settings

The test is done by holding the testing strip vertically into a container containing a urine or serum sample until the sample has migrated to the test window. The testing strip is then laid flat. The test works by detecting hCG in the serum or urine sample as it flows through the assay by first hCG antibodies conjugated with colloidal gold that attach to hCG and provide a “visual tag” for the antigen-antibody-colloidal gold complex and second, by a test zone with immobilized antibodies that capture the complex, the visual tags producing a visible pink-colored band that is confirmation of the presence of hCG. If there is no pink line, hCG is not present, indicating a negative result for pregnancy. Results are ready in 3 minutes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the pregnancy test detect?

The test detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy that can be identified in urine.

When should the test be performed?

For the most reliable results, testing is generally recommended 2–3 weeks after potential conception or after a missed menstrual period, following the manufacturer's instructions.

    How quickly are results available?

Results are typically available in approximately 3 minutes.

    Who can use this test?

The test is intended for use by trained healthcare professionals in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and community health programs.

    What sample type is required?

Depending on the product format, the test uses a urine sample for qualitative detection of hCG.

How do you use the mid-stream pregnancy test?

    1. Remove the test from the sealed pouch. For best results, the test should be performed within one hour.

    2. Remove the protection cap.

    3.  Hold the stick at the handle and keep the tip of the test, point down in the
urine stream. Alternatively, collect the urine in a clean, dry container and dip the
tip of the test into the urine.Place the Absorbent wick in your urine stream or
collected urine for at least 10-15 seconds.

How long should I keep the tip of test in the urine stream or into the
    urine in the container?

You have to place the absorbent wick in your urine stream or
collected urine for at least 10-15 seconds

Note: Do not urinate onto the Test Band Region (T) or Control Band Region (C).

When should I interpret the result after adding urine sample?:

Read the result at 3 minutes. Do not read the result after 10 minutes.
