THE PROBLEM

HIV and syphilis are sexually transmitted infections that, when untreated, pass from mother to child. The presence of syphilis can increase the risk of infection with HIV.  The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) now suggests that all pregnant women be screened for syphilis.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is a 52% higher frequency of women with syphilis experiencing an adverse pregnancy outcome (APO) than women without syphilis. Untreated syphilis infection can also result in birth defects, bone disorders, preterm birth and stillbirth. Testing separately for these two infections is more costly, both financially and in terms of delays of treatment for both infections.

THE SOLUTION

HIV-1/HIV-2/Syphilis Antibody Tests are available that allow simultaneous testing in the field at the point of care for both syphilis and HIV-1/2 using the same blood sample. Both the HIV antibodies and the syphilis antibodies are detected together using a single rapid test within a 10-25 minute time period. Thesingle-use, immunochromatographic, rapid test for the detection of antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus Types 1 and 2 (HIV 1/2) andTreponema pallidum (the causative agent of syphilis) is easy to use and has a shelf-life of 24 months.

The test is an antibody-capture immunochromatographic assay that uses a dual path platform. A sample is applied to the SAMPLE+BUFFER well of the test, which then flows to the TEST area where specific HIV and Syphilis antigens are immobilized (two separate areas within the TEST area for HIV and syphilis). If there are any HIV or syphilis antibodies in the sample, they will bind with these antigens. After five minutes, a buffer is added to the BUFFER well. This buffer hydrates dried antibody-binding colored conjugate located at the BUFFER well, which then migrates to the TEST area. The presence of HIV or syphilis antibodies will result in the antibody-binding colored conjugate binding to the antibodies (which are already bound to the antigens) and producing a pink/purple line in the HIV and syphilis TEST areas - indicating the presence of HIV or syphilis. If there is no line produced, then that indicates no infection.

Results are ready in 10 to 25 minutes after the addition of the buffer to the BUFFER well.
