Rice-based Oral Rehydration Solution 50

Ceralyte 50, a rice-based oral rehydration formulation, can be used for mild dehydration or for maintaining fluid balance and volume.

  • Lower osmolarity, which reduces irritability in the gastrointestinal tract and increases the rate at which fluids are reabsorbed into the body
  • Better absorption in the small intestine, meaning more water and electrolytes can be absorbed into the body
  • Gluten-free and can replace or supplement IVs

THE PROBLEM

Diarrhea is a common problem for many people; bacteria and viruses are among its many causes. Diarrhea often stops in a day or so, but it can become dangerous if lost fluids are not replaced properly, causing dehydration. Essential electrolytes, including an adequate supply of sodium, are needed to regulate the body's delicate fluid balance and to maintain good circulation. Too little fluid volume, or hypovolemia, can cause shock, stroke or cardiac arrest (heart attack). Repeated episodes of dehydration or serious dehydration can permanently harm organ functioning, especially early or late in life.

Common sense suggests that the best treatment for dehydration is drinking water. However, significant electrolyte loss almost always accompanies water loss — so both electrolytes (like sodium) and water must be replaced. Not every liquid rehydrates correctly: water does not provide the needed electrolytes, while sugary or salty drinks (or foods) can make the problem worse. Diarrhea has twice the amount of sodium than sweat, which is why both children and adults can dehydrate so quickly with diarrhea. Children are more susceptible to diarrhea with the flu.

THE SOLUTION

Oral rehydration solution packets address these problems by properly replacing fluids and electrolytes.

This patented rice-based formula is a fast-acting formula that is scientifically-proven to balance fluid levels and improve conditions over time. Cera products replace fluid losses with a composition that is similar to what was lost. It does so by providing the minerals and salts needed for replacing fluids lost from diarrhea. With a lower osmolarity than the WHO formula, our formula increases the rate at which fluids are absorbed into the body. Furthermore, rice can be absorbed throughout the small intestine, unlike simple sugars that can only be absorbed in the top two thirds, allowing for greater absorption of water and electrolytes. Unlike most products targeted to sick children, all of Cera products have zero fructose and zero added sugar.

Used under medical supervision, oral rehydration salts can speed up recovery for both adults and children as the formulation simultaneously treats diarrhea symptoms and rehydrates. Through research and field studies, the formula has been shown to be effective in decreasing fluid loss and shortening acute diarrheal sickness.
