Ready to Use Supplementary Food (RUSF)

-

  • Food for moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) in children 6-59 months of age (also used for pregnant women)
  • RUSFs are fortified with micronutrients and contain essential fatty acids and quality protein to ensure nutritional needs are met
  • Supplementary food is designed for community-level feeding

THE PROBLEM

Moderate acute malnutrition is a pervasive issue in pregnant women and in children.

In pregnant women, moderate malnutrition is defined as MUAC ≥20.6 cm and ≤23.0 cm.  In children, the WHO defines moderate acute malnutrition is defined as moderate wasting (i.e. weight-for-height between –3 and –2 Z-scores of the WHO Child Growth Standards median) and/or mid-upper-arm circumference (MUAC) greater or equal to 115 mm and less than 125 mm.  Supplemental foods are needed to complete the nutritional requirements of both pregnant women and children.  Ideally, such supplemental foods would be pre-packaged without the need for mixing with water.

THE SOLUTION

Ready to Use Supplemental Foods (RUSF) are like their counterpart RUTF, packaged in a foil pouch and ready to eat.  The product is portable and shelf-stable meaning that an nutritionist or clinic can determine the dose and quantity of the supplemental feeding needed but the administration of the daily dosage can occur in the home.  The supplemental foods contain a peanut paste and micronutrients as well as essential fatty acids to ensure proper nutrition is regained under medical supervision.
