The Challenge: Preventing Newborn Hypothermia
Infants are extremely susceptible to hypothermia, even in tropical climates. Hypothermia is an under-appreciated contributor to newborn morbidity and mortality. Low birth weight infants are at higher risk of hypothermia because their thermoregulatory systems are less mature. Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops below 36.5 °C (97.7°F), and can lead to a range of complications including seizures and jaundice. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the delivery room temperature be at least 25 to 28° C (77.0 to 82.4° F). Neonates should be dried immediately and placed in skin-to-skin contact with the mother and covered.
