Unlike handheld thermometers that provide only intermittent readings, the Celsi Monitor continuously measures newborn skin temperature every 10 seconds. This enables clinicians to respond immediately to temperature changes and supports improved neonatal thermal care.
The Celsi Monitor uses a reusable temperature probe attached to a reusable silicone harness that wraps comfortably around an infant's chest to continuously measure skin temperature through direct contact. Temperature readings are updated every 10 seconds and displayed on a large LCD screen that is easily visible across the room. Audio and visual alarms alert healthcare professionals whenever an infant's temperature falls outside the preset range, allowing timely clinical intervention.
Why was the Celsi Monitor developed?
The NEST360 Consortium put together a Target Product Profile to specifically outline the criteria agreed upon by a wide range of stakeholders in the optimal design of a continuous temperature monitor.
The Celsi Monitor is a continuous temperature monitoring device made for challenging environments and busy wards. The small monitor (with very large font readout) clips readily on the side of any cot or bassinet with an adjustable silicone strap.
A silicone sensor connected to the monitor is then placed on the infant's body (chest), attaching to a little Celsi belt around the infant's chest, for continuous measurement of temperature. As opposed to a thermometer, which depends on a health worker stopping by the cot to assess the infant, the Celsi monitor is measuring temperature at all times and displaying changes in temperature on the screen. The temperature is updated every ten seconds. In addition, a large light across the top of the Celsi monitor will turn red (and flash) and immediately draw the attention of clinic or hospital staff if the infant is too warm or too cold. As a next level alert, an audio alarm will also sound to ensure that a baby that is not the right temperature is attended to immediately.
In addition to the large signal light across the entire top of the monitor, and the numeric readout of the temperature, the LCD screen also reads 'HI' if the infant is hyperthermic and 'LO' if the infant is hypothermic.
What is the capacity of the Celsi Monitor?
Is the Celsi Monitor in use with patients?
Yes.
Is the product suitable for low-resource settings?
Yes, absolutely the product was built for use in Malawi and specifically for a newborn unit that does not have multi-parameter infant monitors but is in need of continuous monitoring of the newborn temperature.
Can the Celsi Monitor be used in all infants?
Celsi Monitor is appropriate for neonates greater than 28 weeks gestational age who weigh between 1-4 kg.
What are the contraindications for the Celsi Monitor?
The target population excludes neonates with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) weighing <1000g.
Celsi Monitor is not appropriate for use on neonates who:
-Are less than 28 weeks gestational age
-Have severe birth asphyxia
-Have congenital abnormalities
-Have skin injuries or skin infections
Can the alarm be silenced?
Yes, the alarm can be temporarily silenced.
