    THE PROBLEM

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen that can cause permanent damage to a women’s reproductive system, making pregnancy more difficult and more dangerous. Pregnant women with chlamydia hold a higher risk for birth complications. These include miscarriage, premature birth, and stillbirth. The disease can also be transmitted vertically during birth. Common symptoms of chlamydia include pain when urinating, stomach and pelvis pain, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during sex, bleeding after sex and bleeding between periods. At least 70% of infected women are asymptomatic. However, if chlamydia is left untreated, it can spread to the pelvic and cause pelvic inflammatory disease, a major cause of infertility and ectopic pregnancy in women.

    THE SOLUTION

The Chlamydia rapid test is a convenient antigen-capture immunochromatographic assay for the qualitative detection of Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) antigens from urethral/genital swab specimens. It is intended for professional use as an aid in the diagnosis of C. trachomatis infection.

To test, a swab specimen from the urethral/genital area of the patient is collected. The swab is then placed in a micro tube where two types of specimen extraction buffer are added. The swab is then rotated against the tube and discarded. The sample left in the micro tube is then vortexed and a couple drops added into the sample well of the testing device. The test works by detecting the C. trachomatis antigen in the urethral/genital sample as it flows through the assay by first, C. trachomatis antibodies conjugated with colloidal gold that attach to C. trachomatis antigens and provide a “visual tag” for the antigen-antibody-colloidal gold complex and second, by a test zone with immobilized C. trachomatis antibodies that capture the complex, the visual tags producing a visible pink-colored band that is confirmation of the presence of C. trachomatis and a positive result for chlamydia. If there is no pink line, C. trachomatis is not present, indicating a negative result for chlamydia. Results are ready in 10 minutes.
