THE PROBLEM
Around the world and mostly in low- and middle-income countries, women and infants continue to die in or shortly after birth. Hemorrhage, infection and preeclampsia continue to be leading causes of maternal mortality, leading to an estimated 150,000 maternal deaths every year. Annually, 2.6 million stillbirths occur, half of which occur during labor and delivery. Major causes of stillbirth include childbirth complications, maternal infections, and maternal disorders like hypertension (preeclampsia). Despite high numbers of death, sources of maternal and perinatal death are often preventable or treatable. Yet, in low-resource settings, the necessary and transportable diagnostic and treatment tools may be unavailable to birth attendants.

The Safe Obstetric Solution offers a complete set of medical devices to power a midwife or physician off the grid. The key medical devices in the Solution Set include a hand cranked fetal heart rate monitor to assess the fetus's heart rate. The CRADLE vital signs alert is a blood pressure cuff with a unique readout in traffic signal format (green, orange and red) that helps monitor for preeclampsia. The blood pressure cuff also includes a heart rate monitor to allow pulse to be monitored as well as blood pressure. Finally the NASG (non-pneumatic anti-shock garment) is an external pressure device used to stabilize women experiencing intractable postpartum hemorrhage.
