The portable, power independent Fetal Heart Rate Monitor (FHRM) by Philips is an innovative new monitoring solution that works using a built-in hand crank to power the device so it does not require batteries or electricity. The built-in battery on the Philips fetal heart rate monitor provides up to 10 hours of use. When no electrical supply is available for a recharge, one minute of hand cranking provides 10 minutes of power.

This Philips wind-up fetal heart rate monitor addresses the need for an effective, lightweight and portable solution that can be used by healthcare professionals from midwives to obstetricians in situations where self-sufficiency and portability are essential to effective patient care.
Maternova's partners have tested the Philips hand cranked fetal heart rate monitor in the United States on pregnant women at 10 weeks to 40 weeks and have found the performance to be excellent. Tested in Uganda, and compared to the traditional pinard horn, the FHRM identified 60 percent more fetal heart rate abnormalties.
The original version of the FHRM was developed in South Africa by Powerfree Education Technology, and then upgraded by Philips. The fetal heart rate monitor is used by nurses and midwives in multiple settings in South Africa.
PET, which has been working on the development of the hand-cranked, wind-up fetal doppler for "many years", says it has verified the effect of the device in tests in Uganda, "where 60% more cases of abnormal fetal heart rate were detected in labor, compared to the standard Pinard-stethoscope".
