Newborn Breastfeeding Latch and Sucking Simulator

A newborn latch and breastfeeding simulator is an essential teaching tool for nurses and midwives.

  • Realistic, soft newborn can simulate oral latch
  • Latches and suckles at the breast of the LiquidGoldConcept Lactation Simulation Model
  • Allows simulation of positioning, sucking and attachment

The Problem

Though breastfeeding is a natural process, the mechanism of infant latch, milk ejection and motion of infant tongue and jaw movement are only recently being fully understood. While intuitive for some, many new parents struggle with breastfeeding and older generations have often lost the skills to teach the basics of breastfeeding.  Clinicians, whether pediatricians or other health providers do not typically have more than a few hours of training in the art and science of human lactation, let alone the mechanics of infant latching and feeding.

The Solution

This newborn oral latch and lactation simulator (NORALSim) is the first of its kind, allowing teaching and troubleshooting, paired with LiquidGoldConcept's Lactation Simulation Model (LSM).  The NORALSim is realistic newborn simulator for teaching health professionals and parents to latch a newborn at the breast. The NORALSim can be used to learn to distinguish between a shallow and a deep, asymmetric latch when paired with the LSM.    The simulator allows a way to assess the suck reflex, tongue movement, and  oral cavity for anatomical and functional abnormalities relevant to breastfeeding.

A video of the LSM and NORALSim together is available here.

NORALSim Specifications

  • 7 lbs (3.2 kg)
  • 14 in (35 cm) head circumference
  • 20 in (50 cm) body length
  • Latex-free silicone, baby-soft skin
  • Available in LiquidGoldConcept’s 4 skintones (A, B, C, D)
