Fundal Height Measuring Tape

The fundal height can be used to track the progress of a pregnancy in two-week intervals, to estimate gestational age and track fetal growth. This durable measuring tape has a measuring tape on one side in centimeters. On the other side are pictorial images of danger signs of pregnancy to show pregnant women.

THE PROBLEM

The fundal height that measures larger than expected could indicate abnormal fetal growth and other risk factors such as perinatal morbidity. If the fundal height is smaller than expected, it could indicate slow fetal growth (intrauterine growth restriction) and too much amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios). Delayed growth puts the baby at risk of infection, birth defects, and chromosome abnormalities. If the fundal height is larger than expected, it could signify too much amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios), a multiple pregnancy or significantly larger than average baby. Accurate assessment of gestational age is critical to pediatric care, but is limited in developing countries with poor access to ultrasound.

THE SOLUTION

Maternova and Mommy Measure partnered to bring this obstetric measuring tape tracking pregnancy progress to market.

Fundal height (or symphysio-fundal height) is the distance from the top of the pubic bone to the top of the uterus. The measurement of this height is usually within 1-3cm of the baby’s gestational age in weeks - through some literature does indicate that this measurement is most accurate in the second half of a pregnancy (after 20 weeks). The fundal height can be used to track the progress of a pregnancy in two-week intervals, to estimate gestational age, track fetal growth and general health of the pregnancy.

Evidence in Nigeria indicates that the SFH (symphysio-fundal height) is helpful in identifying IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) when the measurement is below expected and identifying multiples or polyhydramnios if the measurement is above expected.
