Bacterial Vaginosis is widespread, and is a source of discomfort and morbidity for women.  BV has effects upon the newborn as well, with some association to pre-term birth.

A current method for assessing the presence of BV is by measuring signs of elevated sialidase activity.  Sialidase is an enzyme associated with the BV bacteria.  The more BV bacteria present, the higher the sialidase activity.

This test includes a chromogenic substance that will change color upon contact with a vaginal swab specimen. Using a vaginal swab and this rapid test, the researcher or health professional can assess not only the presence of BV but a qualitative assessment of the level of BV.
