LBW Infant Feeder Cup

This autoclavable infant feeder cup is specifically designed for infants who are low birth weight or having trouble breastfeeding.

  • Easy to clean by hand (no sharp corners, fingers can reach everywhere)
  • Can be autoclaved (to 115 deg C)
  • Can be left in the sun (UV-stable)

THE PROBLEM

More than 20 million infants are born low-birth-weight every year. Among other things, low-birth-weight infants are at higher risk for infectious disease and death during infancy and childhood. While exclusive breastfeeding is unequivocally the best option for most babies, including low-birth-weight babies, if a mother cannot breastfeed or a child will not latch then a child will need to be fed expressed breastmilk or put on formula milk. The default method for the administration of expressed breastmilk or formula milk is via a feeding bottle. However, feeding bottles can be difficult to clean. As a result harmful bacteria can get trapped and cause gastroenteritis - a major cause of infant death. Furthermore, if breastfeeding (at the breast) is still the end goal, using feeding bottles in preterm infants (a subset of low-birth-weight infants) for supplemental feeding can cause nipple confusion and may decrease the extent and duration of breastfeeding. In addition, for preterm infants who cannot yet suck, feeding bottles will not work.

THE SOLUTION

This carefully designed solution for LBW infants is scientifically proven to be better than the bottle feed.  It is much easier to clean a cup than a bottle and teat. The risk of diarrhea is less with a cup than bottle feeding. Cup feeding requires very little effort from the baby. Babies are always held and watched while cup feeding. Babies can control their own pace of drinking. The baby's mouth & tongue movements are similar to cup and breastfeeding. It is easy to express breast milk into a cup.

The kit comes with the following components:

  • Large 250ml translucent cup
