These squeeze pouches combine a nutritional solution with clean water in two connected pouches to meet the WHO F-100 formula criteria. The two halves are mixed together at the point of use, and the child is fed through a nozzle that is part of the packaging.
Severe acute malnutrition (SAM), which is defined as severe wasting, bilateral oedema, or very low mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), affects approximately 19 million children under five years of age worldwide and kills 400,000 children every year. Additionally, more than 2 billion people, including children, do not have access to clean drinking water. Drinking unclean water can lead to or exacerbate malnutrition.
The combined burden of lack of access to nutritional food and clean water, which is especially seen in disaster settings, means it can be difficult for children to recover from severe acute malnutrition. While separate solutions exist for both these issues, there are no solutions that address both issues in one product.
For children suffering from severe acute malnutrition who are stable and do not or no longer present with medical complications, severe edema, or poor appetite (either upon first examination or after taking the F-75 formulation), they need to be given the necessary nutrients to “catch-up” in growth. Despite being stable, the child is still suffering from severe acute malnutrition and needs a nutrition solution that will help recover, repair, and rebuild wasted tissues. Normal solid foods are insufficient to meet this need. In addition, some children who are severely malnourished do not have the capacity to consume solid foods.
The F-100 therapeutic pediatric milk is an infant and child nutrition solution for humanitarian settings that addresses multiple issues faced in these settings:
The product is tailored for children 6-60 months and is based on the WHO F-100 formulation guideline on the rehabilitation stage of nutritional malnutrition management (phase 2 treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)). Only children who have either completed phase 1 or are stable should be fed the product. The F-100 formulation is higher in protein and energy, and is meant for “catch-up.”
By providing both a nutritional solution and clean water, the pediatric milk addresses two issues that together threaten the health and lives of children around the globe.
The F-100 dual pouches contain 40g powder with 160ml water. The powder is scientifically formulated considering the gut is not working optimally. Additionally, it is the only whey-dominant feed that is also lactose-free, and it is low disaccharide with a very low osmolality.
