Irwin Shorr is someone who was a social entrepreneur long before this term was invented. He didn’t seek fame or twitter followers—he simply made a better way to measure and identify malnourished children all over the world. His measuring device uses wood and knowledge to create a simple but effective way to measure children and determine whether they are stunted in their growth. The ShorrBoard® is cited in publications, clinical studies and medical journals where it is the gold standard for measurement in many countries for use on surveys, growth monitoring and in research studies worldwide. Shorr now sells his measuring boards through his social enterprise, [Weigh and Measure, LLC](http://weighandmeasure.com/) (formerly Shorr Productions, LLC). We found Irwin Shorr through a tip from our friends at [Edesia](http://www.edesiaglobal.org/), when we were looking for someone who sold the MUAC bracelets.
Irwin J. Shorr, MPH, MPS, is an expert on anthropometric measurement. He is a nutritionist who has worked in 38 countries over the past nearly 40 years on anthropometric nutrition assessment and evaluation with an emphasis on anthropometry training as part of large-scale national surveys worldwide in developing countries, the US and Europe. He is also a Lecturer at The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health where he teaches the anthropometry component of nutrition assessment courses to graduate students. So his expertise on children's nutrition is top notch.
In his work on anthropometry, Irwin has created solutions where current solutions were inadequate. He has written extensively on the subject including training manuals such as [“How To Weigh And Measure Children”](http://www.worldcat.org/title/how-to-weigh-and-measure-children-assessing-the-nutritional-status-of-young-children-in-household-surveys-preliminary-version/oclc/22209317) for the UN (1986) that has been translated into several languages and distributed worldwide. He invented the ShorrBoard®, a line of measuring boards that are in use in more than 120 countries by a variety of different organizations and institutions including all the UN agencies such as UNICEF, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), The World Food Program (WFP), The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), etc, as well as for universities, research studies and special projects such as the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) project for all of its surveys worldwide for over 25 years, the World Bank, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and countless governments and organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, Africare, Catholic Relief Services, Concern Ireland, as well as WIC clinics, state health departments, hospitals and physicians’ offices. One model of the ShorrBoard® was used on the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) for home visits.
The photos show the ShorrBoard® in use in different countries around the world, and the first photo shows Irwin Shorr instructing on the use of his invention.
