We pause at the start of 2013 to reiterate what drives us in what we do. As you may well know, Maternova is building an online marketplace for technologies and protocols that save the lives of mothers and newborns. We want to remove epic layers of red tape to make it easy for clinicians and researchers to access life-saving technologies. We'd like to make it as easy as click and ship.
And the path to creating a new social enterprise is not easy. Especially in the field of global health. Issues related to logistics, shipping, insurance, intellectual property and competition intervene. What drives our team is the knowledge that women and infants do not have to die in childbirth. We are focused on the question of HOW can we more efficiently and more quickly get life-saving devices like the non-pneumatic anti-shock garment
, obstetric balloons and misoprostol to the point of care where it is needed. There are many groups working at all levels on maternal and newborn health--from the White Ribbon Alliance at the advocacy level to new clinics and MCH wards in every country around the world. But we focus specifically on aggregating appropriate technologies in one online marketplace, making it easy to see what is in R&D, what's available now and to order the product immediately
We believe that part of the solution is innovation-- and we believe that innovation needs to be tracked, aggregated, promoted and when possible, commercialized. While we use market mechanisms we aim to be far more than an online store! Our new collaboration platform allows
end users of technologies to stay in touch with each other and in some cases with the entrepreneur or the inventor of the product. Our mapping technology allows groups to keep track of the level of care or the type of training or product used in specific facilities. The link between all of these initiatives is the efficient use of technology to save lives more rapidly.
