Microneedles are "micron-scale needles fabricated using low-cost manufacturing methods that administer vaccine into the skin using a simple device that may be suitable for self-administration." (Curr Top Microbiol Immunol. 2009;333:369-93. Microneedle-based vaccines. Prausnitz MR, Mikszta JA, Cormier M, Andrianov AK.) Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology published this paper.

The small, hollow needles have many advantages
- the pain response is much lower than with intramuscular injections
- lower doses yield equal results to intramuscular injections
- the microneedle patch is inexpensive to fabricate
- self-administration, or administration by someone other than a trained healthworker is possible

The Glostavent (r) Anaesthesia Machine by Diamedica is an impressive technology, able to provide anaesthesia with or without electricity or compressed gasses. The fully mechanical device is "suitable to be used as an anaesthetic machine for spontaneous breathing or ventilated patients, or as a ventilator in a recovery room or for longer term ventilation in an Intensive Care Unit."

It is the "first anaesthetic machine that meets the WFSA Performance Standard for Anaesthetic Equipment for Low and Low-Middle Income (LMIC) Countries."

Gradian Health has developed the Universal Anaesthesia Machine. According the Gradian website, the "UAM delivers safe anaesthesia in any hospital, including those where unreliable electricity and shortages of compressed medical gases preclude the use of conventional machines. Its unique combination of continuous flow and draw-over anaesthesia qualifies it for use in facilities from world-renown hospitals to resource-constrained district hospitals in low-income countries."

In certain emergencies the only way to save mother and infant is through a c-section which requires anaesthesia. This device by Diamedica is described in the newest WHO Medical Device Compendium (2012) and offers a rapid response system for austere environments making it possible to provide anaesthesia for spontaneous breathing or assisted ventilation. It does not require compressed gasses or electricity. The device includes "a valve with a circuit removing the valve, a reservoir unit for pre-oxygenation, a vaporiser for consistency over a wide temperature range, and is calibrated for Halothane/Isoflurane or Sevoflurane to overcome possible supply problems."
