The partograph is a simple single page monitoring tool for the first stage of labor.   The tool allows the trained birth attendant to monitor the progress of labor, the mother and the fetus, hour by hour and to have a clear means of tracking whether labor is obstructed--with 'alert' and 'action' lines signaling when a labor has become complicated.   The tool was modified by the WHO and reintroduced in a simpler form.  Nevertheless, its use is not consistent and training with the partogram is sporadic in many settings.   To download a full copy please click here.  A WHO guide for managing obstructed or prolonged labor--and for using the partograph is here.  For the Spanish PAHO CLAP/OMS version click here

The tool is not without its detractors.  Some professionals have expressed concern over the amount of time that is charted between the 'alert' and 'action' lines.  Others are concerned that the the tool is too complex for some, and still others are not fans of the tool at all.   Comments are welcome here.  WHO has a CD-ROM called the WHO Partograph E-Leaning Tool
