A low-cost sensing strip for the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia is in development--a diagnostic embedded in a stretchy 'super skin' powered by solar power! Eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity and detection of eclampsia and pre-eclampsia is challenging. With a grant from the Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Explorations competition, Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University, will develop a sensing strip with a diagnostic reader. Diagnosis of pre-eclampsia will be based upon the fact that there is an electrical current change when certain biomarkers associated with pre-eclampsia are present.
