Paperless partogram post now translated in Spanish and Arabic. We are grateful for a short paper submitted by Dr. Debas to Maternova for the material that developed into this post.

Dr. A K Debdas has developed the paperless partogram--a new, simplified protocol to prevent prolonged labor and reduce the risk of mortality for both mothers and babies. In the paperless partogram model, clinicians calculate two times, an ALERT ETD (estimated time of delivery) and an ACTION ETD. Both ETDs should be written in big letters on a woman’s case management sheet, the ACTION ETD circled in red. This protocol takes about 20 seconds and helps clinicians ensure that women do not suffer prolonged labor. For example, if uterine contractions are poor close to the ALERT ETD, clinicians can give women oxytocin or an equivalent to strengthen contractions.
