Rice University's  "Beyond Traditional Borders" program has developed an OB/GYN Lab-in-a-Backpack.  This well-packaged idea was tested in 2009 in Guatemala and Nicaragua and we will track its commercial availability.  A portable stirrups board/attachment is one very innovative device within the backpack--and importantly this device can be made in country.

Yvette Mirabal of Rice 360 writes, "The OB/GYN Backpack contains the essential supplies to perform 100 well-woman exams. It contains items to perform a Pap smear, prenatal, and syphilis testing as well as a glucometer, urinalysis strips, essential lighting, and portable stirrups. In addition, it is compatible with the BTB/Rice360 Diagnostic Lab-in-a-Backpack which allows for detecting anemia, bacterial vaginosis, yeast, and trichomoniasis. The major devices in the pack are powered by a compact computer battery which can be charged by AC wall power or a solar panel. Additional space within the backpack allows for the user to customize the pack with supplies based on the needs of the area where it will be used.  Contact Rice directly for more information.
