A new clinical study is being done on the efficacy of BCG vaccine in preventing infections other than TB. Projecto Saude Bandim in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. The study aims to prove that the "immuno-enhancing effects" of BCG vaccine administered very soon after birth will be effective in reducing infant morality from other common infections. The project hopes to show a 50% reduction in infant mortality through a cluster randomized trial. A variety of supports will be used to enhance service delivery, including mobile phones to connect community health workers with the clinics.
