MgSO4 for Eclampsia

Last Update: March 07, 2011
MgSO4, magnesium sulfate, treatment for pre-eclampsia, eclampsia

Preeclampsia and eclampsia are hypertensive disorders of pregnancy best treated by an anticonvulsive called magnesium sulfate (MgSO4).  While the use of this compound (in injectable form) is not an 'innovation,' it is underutilized because providers are undertrained, protocols don't cover it, and it is unavailable in some countries.  It is a very low-cost drug--and the innovation will lie in novel campaigns, training and potentially packaging & distribution.

EngenderHealth convened a meeting of international experts on this issue--resulting in a 'Call to Action' and the recommendation of the development of eclampsia treatment packs. The report notes that 'these packs would contain magnesium sulfate (prepackaged for recommended standard dosing), calcium gluconate (an antidote for toxicity from magnesium sulfate), supplies for intravenous and intramuscular administration, record sheets to record clinical monitoring findings, and a protocol sheet that also includes guidelines for other aspects of relevant care... Making these treatment packs accessible to health care providers could help ensure healthier pregnancies for numerous women worldwide.' For more information, see EngenderHealth’s report
