Jacaranda Health combines business and clinical innovation to create a sustainable chain of clinics that provide reproductive health care to poor urban women. The Jacaranda model has two primary components. First, mobile vans link providers with patients to bolster demand and provide birth preparedness and antenatal care. Second, clinics near the slums allow women to access obstetric care, safe delivery, family planning, and postnatal care. Jacaranda was selected as a winner of the Ashoka Healthy Mothers, Strong World: The Next Generation of Ideas for Maternal Health competition in March 2010. Jacaranda is currently working to launch a single mobile unit and clinic in Nairobi and plans to scale up to 30 clinics in cities across East Africa after proving the strength of the model in Nairobi.
