Neil Powell, in response to a UNICEF call to address global health problems, has designed the Information Blanket, a blanket for babies that would educate Ugandan mothers about infant care in an area where information regarding health care is scarce. Uganda has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world, with 77 of every 1000 babies dying before their first birthday. The blanket addresses basics for infant care such as breastfeeding 8-12 times a day, vaccination deadlines, a growth chart, and warning signs that a mother should pay attention to. Partnering with Ugandan non-profit Shanti Uganda, Powell and his new company, named after his product, will begin distribution to families in May, with the intention of spreading their model to other countries.
