The Program for Appropriate Technology in Health has developed a sanitizer and disinfectant called Byotrol to be used during birthing. Byotrol is an antimicrobial disinfectant in a water-based foaming formulation. Byotrol is to be used in health settings in developing countries where water and soap and alcohol-based sanitizer are not easily available or adapted by health care workers. PATH is the recipient of a two-year grant that will be used to evaluate the use of Byotrol against the protocol disinfectants and will determine provider acceptability, efficacy, and feasibility. This technology came to our attention through the Saving Lives at Birth Challenge, 2011. USAID, the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and The World Bank have joined to launch Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development.
