Building on the success of its steel-framed bicycle ambulance, Design for Development is further improving affordability and sustainability with the bambulance, a bicycle-pulled emergency medical transport device designed and manufactured with bamboo. In areas where bamboo is plentiful, such as East Africa, this design offers a lightweight, strong, and sustainable emergency transport device that can help save lives when motorized transport is unavailable or inappropriate. The bambulance project also includes community-based training in manufacturing and maintenance, specifically seeking to support local ownership and provide employment opportunities for HIV positive women. The bambulance pilot began in west Kenya in June of 2008, and the project was nominated for a People’s Design Award in 2009. Thanks to GOOD Design for calling our attention to the bambulance!
